Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) was established on 20th August 2002 and managed by Universiti Teknikal Mara Sdn. Bhd, a subsidiary of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

The university focuses on various academic disciplines such as Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Product Design and Manufacturing, Industrial Maintenance and Manufacturing, Telecommunication, Automative, Aviation, Chemical and Biotechnology, Marine Engineering as well as Medical and Applied Sciences.

UniKL has the concept of "One Institute, One Specialisation" and its institutes offer various Foundation, Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. UniKL has 13 institutes spread out in 11 campuses throughout Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca, Perak, Kedah and Johore.

Proudly, Universiti Kuala Lumpur has achieved the Tier 5 - Excellent rating in the 2011 MQA Rating system for Malaysia Higher Education Institute (SETARA 2011). SETARA measures the quality of Teaching and Learning at the undgraduate level in all universities and univerisities colleges in Malaysia.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur - British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) was formely known as Tuas Polytech, which was established on 1st September 1993. Initially it runs Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The programme was franchised from Wigan and Leigh College, UK. Then in 1995, Medical Elctronic Engineering programmed were added, franchised from University of Hertfordshire, UK.

In November 1997, Tuas Polytech changed his name to British Malaysian Institute in line with the government's vision of transferring foreign technologies to Malaysian Industries. Three new programmes were added: Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Engineering and Business Information Technology. British Malaysian Institute was then absorbed into Universiti Kuala Lumpur in August 2002 and started its first Bachelor program in July 2003 namely Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Electrical  Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Electronic Engineering. Currently, UniKL BMI runs five Bachelor programs and 3 Diploma programs with 2200 students population. UniKL BMI also runs postgraduate courses by research mode (Master and PhD programmes).
